Masonry usually comes up when soil is moving or a level is wrong. A bed that washes into the lawn every storm, a slope that will not hold mulch, a patio edge that has sunk, a step that wobbles. Plants do not fix any of that. A wall or a hard border does, and it also gives the beds a permanent line to work to.
We look at where water goes before we look at what the wall will be made of, because a wall built across a drainage path becomes the next problem.
We walk the site with you, measure the run, check the fall of the ground and talk about height. Height matters more than length, because a low garden wall and a genuine retaining wall are two different builds.
